2013 Triathlon England – National Championships sell out at Dambuster

The Dambuster Triathlon, the second of seven events that make up the new look 2013 Triathlon England – National Championships, has now sold out. The event which basks in the scenic surrounds of Rutland Water Nature Trust, Leicestershire, is taking place on 22 June and has always been a popular event.

However, triathletes from around the UK certainly appear to have been inspired to secure their place at the race and compete for a national title with the 1,000 places taken up in record time.

The Standard Distance race will kick off with a 1.5K swim, with the start and finish taking place in front of the spectator friendly Harbour Bar. This is followed by a 42K bike around the spectacular rural scenery of the nature reserve with the final 9.7K run taking place around the lake, crossing the iconic dam after which the event is named.

Over the past year, interest in the sport of triathlon has increased dramatically and more women in particular are getting involved and ‘giving it a tri’ for themselves. In 2012, over 700 triathlons, duathlons and aquathlons took place in England, seeing over 125,000 people competing in races and many of them for the first time.

Jem Lawson, Chair of Triathlon England, said “It’s great news to see how interest in the sport is continuing to grow and we are excited to say that our 2013 Triathlon England – National Triathlon Championships is already proving very popular. The Dambuster event sell-out shows these events are growing, and we hope that this in turn will encourage many more to get involved.

“Our memberships have been increasing steadily and we hope the value we offer will inspire more to get involved.”

Mark Shaw, of Race Organiser Pace Setter Events, said “The event sold out in record time this year, the fastest ever! The combination that the race is the Triathlon England – National Triathlon Championships for the first time, alongside a qualifier for the World Championships in London, has increased the profile and led to more excitement ahead of the race.”

The Dambuster will also see the very first outing of the new Triathlon England Engagement Trailer which will provide a state-of-the-art facility for race-goers to talk to experienced members of the national governing body on a range of issues. Triathlon England staff will be on hand all day and are hoping to receive valuable feedback about the membership benefits it provides and to discuss other new initiatives currently happening within the sport.
