Ahead of Tri2Aspire’s three-day training camp at the Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi this weekend, event organisers and 2008 Ironman World Champion Craig Alexander have noted Dubai’s credentials for hosting a world class triathlon.
Having won Singapore’s Aviva Triathlon before heading to Dubai, Alexander said that "Dubai has all the right attributes required to stage a world class marathon and we’ve seen from the organisational skills that go into making the Standard Chartered Marathon a success that an event like the triathlon can go on successfully."
2008 Ironman World Champion Craig Alexander is visiting Dubai to deliver a training camp from Thursday 26th to Saturday 28th March.
The special training camp is being held in conjunction with Tri2Aspire (T2A), the UAE’s leading triathlon team and specialists in executive and VIP health and triathlon coaching. T2A is managed by Australian Jason Metters, a Triathlon Coach and Personal Fitness Advisor.
In a report in local English language newspaper Gulf News, Metters noted the potential for a triathlon to emulate the success of the Standard Chartered Marathon. "Triathlon is the fastest growing sport in the world. People don’t have access to much top level racing and we’re hoping to give people that opportunity. What we’re trying to do is raise the awareness of the sport and have something like the Standard Chartered Marathon staged here.” He added, “The sport is making inroads and will help showcase Dubai to the world and I don’t think we’re too far away from a major competition coming to town."
Speaking to triathlonbusiness.com, Metters noted that “triathlon is a fringe sport within the Middle East, as in any other city or country.” However, he also pointed out that “the [Craig Alexander] camp was a sell out so we must be doing something right!”
