The inaugural ESi Ironman 70.3 Augusta generated US$4.7 million (€3.2 million) for the local economy, according to the Greater Augusta Sports Council.
The event held on 27 September had 3,000 competitors. Prior to Ironman 70.3 Augusta taking place, the sports council was estimating the event would have around a US$2 million impact.
“The positive reaction continues to flow in from local businesses and local residents. It was a huge injection of revenue into the community, which is what we badly need during this economy,” said Tammy Stout, Executive Director of the Greater Augusta Sports Council.
Ironman 70.3 Augusta is expected to return to Augusta for at least the next two years. The 2010 event is held on Sunday 26 September 2010.
“It is further proof for the Augusta market that amateur sport continues to impact our market strongly. We’ve seen increases in participation in a number of our state and national events this year. It is further proof that we need to continue to invest in sports marketing,” Ms Stout added.
