Sponsored by specialist running & triathlon store MOTI, and by international sports brand Mizuno, Bristol & District Triathletes (BADtri) has unveiled the first annual Bristol Triathlon Festival to take place on 25 and 26 July 2009. Supporting children’s charity Wooden Spoon, the triathlon festival consists of two days of racing for both junior and adult triathletes, and brings highly anticipated triathlon races to the Greater Bristol area in the South West of the UK.
Shaun Lancaster of MOTI and BADtri told triathlonbusiness that the Triathlon Festival is much needed in the Bristol area. With support from Mizuno and Bristol and Cardiff based running, fitness and triathlon retailer MOTI – the event is expected to have a high profile in the region.
The Triathlon Festival launch took place at Tockington School on 3 April, with support from Gareth Chilcott former Rugby Union international and ambassador for the Wooden Spoon charity.
Nadia Saba, Chairperson of BADtri said, “We are immensely proud to be supporting the continued growth of triathlon in the Bristol area by staging a local race, and we are doubly pleased to be doing it in association with such a marvellous charity and cause. This is entirely congruent with our ethos, and we hope the funds raised for disadvantaged children through this will be considerable.”
In the Bristol area, BADtri has seen phenomenal growth with membership growing to 570 triathletes since the club’s launch 5 years ago. The interest in triathlon was witnessed last year at Horfield Leisure Centre when the ‘Corus Kids of Steel’ event tempted over 600 8-12 year-olds to take part in a day of triathlon racing.
David Hooper, Regional Development Manager for British Triathlon added, “We’re delighted to have a new British Triathlon sanctioned race in the Bristol area. The participation in triathlon within the area is particularly high, thanks to BADtri and races of this kind are very much needed.”
