Cycling governing body the International Cycling Union (UCI – Union Cycliste Internationale) is introducing a new approval system for bicycle design.
Commencing on 1 January 2011, the new system intends to streamline (and overcome any confusion over) the approval of bike products for use in competition.
The UCI approval system initially focuses on bicycle frames and forks. In due course, the intention is to expand beyond these product types and include clothing, handlebars, wheels and other equipment.
The pre-approval process will be offered to any product still in the conceptual phase as of 1 January 2011. Accepted designs will be labelled as meeting regulations (as well as having a listing on the UCI website). Older models from 2009 and 2010 will be able to apply for back-dated approval.

The 1st January, 2011 will mark a new step in the collaboration between the International Cycling Union (UCI) and bicycle manufacturers: a new approval procedure for bike frames and forks will come into force on this date.
