In the latest edition of its Orca Echo, ahead of the 2010 Ironman World Championships, Orca unveiled ‘a fantastic competition, new gear, latest news and some great clearance specials.’
A new addition to the Orca line-up is a range of performance Merino wool activewear. According to Orca, merino is one of nature’s ‘superfibres’ with some incredible performance characteristics.
‘The best Merino in the world comes from Orca’s home country of New Zealand, and we use premium 100% New Zealand Merino throughout the range.’
There are three types of gear in the range:
Everyday: 100% Merino essentials you can wear at work, home and play.
Raceday: technical multi-activity garments ‘with standout performance characteristics’. Includes the cycle-specific Velo range.
Restday: a world first fabric innovation, ‘SeaMerino’ sees Merino blended with a seaweed based fibre called SeaCell. According to Orca, nutrients and minerals are delivered to the skin when the garment is worn, increasing blood flow and improving skin health.
Merino is ideal for use as a base layer as it regulates body temperature, manages moisture, is anti-odour and has a comfortable feel close to the skin. It can also be layered to provide a comfortable barrier against harsh weather conditions.
The range is available through retailers and orca.com in the United Kingdom and New Zealand, and exclusively through zappos.com in the United States (from mid October).
Another promotion from Orca invited triathlete fans to predict Craig Alexander’s swim, bike and run splits at the 2010 Ironman World Championships. There was a chance to win one of three US$100 vouchers to spend at orca.com. Correctly predict his overall finish time and you had the chance to win US$500 to spend online.
As any fan of Craig Alexander will know, he races in his own custom race kit. Orca has made a limited run of ‘Crowie’ special edition tri tanks and tri pants, which are exactly the same as the gear he races in.
The tank is based on the Orca 226 Tri Tank and the pant is based on the Orca Perform Tri Pant, ‘offering the performance, comfort and durability it takes to meet Crowie’s requirements.’

Orca’s Facebook page has been up and running for a few months and more than 3000 Orca fans already like the page. At the end of October Orca will be selecting one person from its Facebook fanbase to win an Orca Alpha wetsuit, giving consumers an incentive to add Orca to their Facebook community.
