The UCI Road World Championships, which took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, in September attracted 166 million television spectators according to latest statistics released by the International Cycling Union, Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).
While Copenhagen’s roads were lined with more than 250,000 spectators watching their cycling heroes in the flesh, those who could not make the trip tuned into one of numerous television channels broadcasting images of the UCI’s leading event of the year.
Figures released by the television analysis company IFM show that more than 166 million viewers worldwide watched the event during 320 hours of broadcasting time, including live coverage, news items and delayed coverage.
Images were relayed throughout the world by Denmark (TV2, TV2 Sport), France (France 3), Italy (Rai 3, Rai Sport 2), the Netherlands (Ned 1 & 2), Belgium (Ketnet / Canvas, RTBF 2), Spain (Teledeporte) and Switzerland (TSR2, RSI la 2, SF2 & SF Info). Further broadcasts were aired by Eurosport, Eurosport PAN Asia Pacific, and in Australia (SBS and SBS 2), Canada (Rogers Sportsnet), USA (Universal Sports), Brasil (Globosat), India (Ten Sports), China (Guangdong TV) and South Africa (MNet Supersport).
