CELTMAN! for the bravehearted!

While the route for the inaugural CELTMAN! Extreme Scottish Triathlon, for the moment, remains under wraps – further details have been made available by the event organisers. The CELTMAN! Extreme Scottish Triathlon will take place on 23 June 2012 in Wester Ross, Scotland.

For the Bravehearted, not the faint-hearted!
The distances are ‘iron-like’ and the terrain severe. Athletes will be expected to complete a 3.8K (bracing!) sea-loch swim, an arduous 180K road cycle and a 42K exposed mountainous run (approximately 75% is off-road). This will require endurance, stamina, great bike handling skills and technical off-road running experience. The approximate ascent for the whole race is 4,000m (13,000 feet).

The CELTMAN! is supported by The Tri Centre, the Edinburgh based multisport retailer that specialises in products across the road, cross and triathlon categories.

Norseman to CELTMAN!
Inspired by the iconic Norseman event, the CELTMAN! organisers note the support received from the Norseman team, across the North Sea in Norway. As the organisers were at pains to stress, “We are very grateful to the organisers of the incredible Norseman race for their support, endorsement, and for inspiring us to create the CELTMAN!. Thanks guys.”

Entry opens in November
The 2012 CELTMAN! will have numbers restricted 150 for the first year of the race. Entries will open at 00:01hrs GMT on 5 November and will close at midnight on 19 November. The entry process is not on a ‘1st come, 1st served’ basis – all entries in the 2 week window in early November will be considered equally. If the organisers receive more than 150 applicants, they will then carry out a ballot to determine the lucky qualifiers. Judging from the interest received thus far, more than 150 applications are expected, so interested racers are advised not to miss the closing deadline!

CELTMAN! will notify successful applicants by e-mail as soon as possible after the application deadline. Successful applicants will be notified before being charged the entry fee, priced at £225.00 for the inaugural 2012 event.

Support crew
Each athlete will require a support car/crew – comprising at least one person (more than one support person may be useful – it’s going to be a long day!). One of the crew must be fit and able enough to accompany the competitor during the last leg of the run over a large mountain! Mandatory safety kit will be required.

All athletes will need to be in Torridon, Scotland at least the day before the race (on 22 June 2012 at the latest). Torridon is a small remote village and is at least 5 hours drive from Glasgow or Edinburgh.

A full race manual will be produced shortly and the organisers anticipate being able to distribute this to successful entrants in early December.
