World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), owner of the Ironman brand and LAVA Magazine, has announced that LAVA has won a prestigious 2011 Maggie Award for ‘Best Single Editorial Photograph in a Consumer Magazine.’
The winning photograph of two-time Ironman world champion Craig Alexander was taken by LAVA’s senior photographer Don Miralle for LAVA’s inaugural issue. LAVA Magazine’s editorial team was on hand at the award banquet in Los Angeles to accept their award.
“Our staff was very gratified to be nominated for seven Maggies,” said LAVA Publisher, John Duke, “but to actually win an award was incredible. Most of our team has been in the triathlon publishing business for many years and this was not only our first award, it was our first nomination.”
More than 400 members of the magazine industry gathered on April 30th at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel in Los Angeles for the 60th annual Maggie Awards. Competing against such established titles as Mother Jones, Men’s Fitness and OC Weekly, the Maggie Award nominees represent the best achievements among US West-Coast-based publishing companies.
LAVA, which launched in July 2010, ‘takes readers into the fiery centre of triathlon’ and is available by subscription.
All US domestic athletes who registered for a 2010 Ironman or 70.3 event in North America or who signed up for a 2011 Ironman or 70.3 event in North America by 31 December 2010, received a complimentary one-year subscription. In 2010, the magazine also became available to international athletes, following the same registration criteria, in digital form.
Playing homage to the volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean where Ironman and the sport began, LAVA delves into the entire multisport scene. Athletes who value the regular and hard-core multisport experience are the target for the magazine. With LAVA you will find the latest news, gear, people, events, training, photography and features.
