Having had electronic shifting in place for some time for its top-end Dura-Ace Di2 groupset, Shimano is now unveiling similar shifting technology for Ultegra. The new 2012 Ultegra Di2 6770 series is expected to become available this autumn/winter.
Understood to be around half the price of Dura-Ace Di2, the Ultegra Di2 groupset is pitched at a more affordable price point. While retail prices have yet to be confirmed, the electronic Ultegra should be priced below the regular mechanical Dura-Ace.
The Shimano Ultegra 6770 series with Di2 technology consists of Dual Control Levers, electronically operated front and rear derailleurs, a battery and electric cables. For the remaining components – such as the Hollowtech II crankset, brake callipers, cassette sprockets and chain – users can rely on the mechanical products of the Ultegra 6700 component group.
Utilising a simpler wiring system and a slimmer profile, the Di2 Ultegra system uses different electric cables to the Dura-Ace Di2. However, the battery and mounting options are similar enough to work with existing Di2 compatible frames.
