DRIVE 4 TRIathlon is a charitable project that connects Europe with Africa. It sees Nicolas Gracco de Lay, an age grouper triathlete, taking on a 25,000km road trip by car between France and South Africa, meeting with local athletes, discovering their continent and ultimately participating in Ironman South Africa in Port Elizabeth, on 22 April 2012.
DRIVE 4 TRIathlon will meet with local sporting federations (triathlon, athletics, swim and bike) throughout Africa – and will train with local athletes throughout the journey. The project will raise funds for the charity Ironman 4 the Kidz.
While on his way throughout Africa, Nicolas has put his weight behind the Ironman 4 the Kidz Charity Trust and is collecting items for auction after the Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa event, the proceeds of which will all be donated to the charity.
Donations from French Olympian Fred Belaubre, and Sylvian Subrie, 2012 ITU Long Distance World Champion have bolstered the DRIVE 4 TRIathlon initiative as it makes its way across Africa.
Nicolas said that his journey is not only a test of human endurance but more importantly a way of promoting the benefits of sport and triathlon and motivating kids and athletes in general.
Olivier Berraud, of the French Triathlete magazine is the commentator on the journey. Meanwhile, national TV, press and radio in Senegal, Togo, Nigeria, Cameroun and Gabon are helping to spread the word about triathlon and raise much needed funds.
