Last weekend’s Ironman 70.3 Lanzarote challenge at the Club La Santa sports resort in Spain’s Canary Islands has been hailed a success by organisers and participants.
Almost 800 competitors, including more than 200 UK entrants, enrolled to take part in the inaugural event, held at the leading international sport and active holiday resort in Lanzarote on Saturday 10 November.
The race, which comprised the IM 70.3 1.9K swim, 90K bike ride and a 21.1K half marathon, was won by Spain’s Ivan Raña Fuentes in an overall time of 4:07:36. The ladies event was won by Danne Boterenbrood from Holland in an overall time of 4:40:06.
Those who took part praised the organisers for arranging the event. Triathlete and coach Richard Hobson from Triliving said, “I have to say that was one of the most awesome races I have ever done, for so many reasons; fantastic course and amazing organisation. To share it with so many old and new friends was just amazing.”
Starting in the Club La Santa lagoon, the race took the athletes through Famara, Teguise and Tachiche, then along to Arrieta, before climbing up Tabayesco and back to Teguise and finishing back at Club La Santa.
Head of Club La Santa UK, Claire Dyson said “We couldn’t have asked for a better day, the event was a sporting triumph for Lanzarote and Club La Santa. The UK participants were fantastic and took many of the podium places on the day.”
Club La Santa launched the first Ironman 70.3 Lanzarote event earlier this year. The Ironman 70.3 challenge is the first of its kind to be held at Club La Santa. Club La Santa, the leading sports and active holiday resort is also an official organiser of the main Ironman Lanzarote event, which takes place in May each year.
As noted by the event organisers, triathlon is a growing sport within the UK and the amount of UK entries in the Ironman 70.3 Lanzarote event shows the opportunities for triathlon domestically and as a destination experience. The organisers stated, ‘We’re delighted with the feedback we have received and look forward to welcoming everyone back next year.’
Next year’s Ironman 70.3 Lanzarote will take place on 5 October 2013.
