The village of Lake Placid, New York, has celebrated the contract extension of Ironman Lake Placid and the 14th edition of the race – which took place yesterday, Sunday 22 July.
“We are so happy to announce another five years of magic in the awe-inspiring Adirondack Mountains,” said Greg Borzilleri, Race Director for Ironman Lake Placid. “It is an honour and a privilege to be the race director for one of the best Ironman events in the continental US. The race impacts the community in such a positive way and I thank the volunteers, spectators, residents and athletes who continue to make it so special each and every year.”
One of more than 30 events in the global Ironman Series, Ironman Lake Placid is known as the oldest Ironman event in the continental US and features one of the most beautiful courses on the circuit.
The two-loop swim course takes place in Mirror Lake, followed by a unique transition in the Olympic Speed-Skating Oval. The 112-mile bike leads athletes along state, county and local roads while passing breath-taking vistas of the Adirondack Mountains and the New York countryside. The spectator friendly marathon runs by downtown Lake Placid four times and features tree-lined river scenery.
Offering a professional prize purse of US$25,000, the race also awards a total of 50 slots for the 2012 Ironman World Championship, taking place on 13 October in Kailua-Kona, Hawai’i.
