Joe Friel Italian tri camp report from Tri Dynamic

Martin Boddie from Tri Dynamic has sent in his camp report from the recent Italian Tri Camp with Coaching Legend Joe Friel. The week long camp was based in the beautiful town of Riccione in the hilly region of Emilia-Romagna where cycling lengend Marco Pantani lived and trained.

Athletes covered off more than 30 hours of training across all three sports with evening classroom and Q&A sessions with the author of ‘The Triathlete’s Training Bible’ Joe Friel. The camp culminated with the option to ride in Italy’s largest Gran Fondo, Nove Colli with 16,000 participants taking part in either the ‘short’ 130K or long 200K routes over some very challenging climbs.

Athletes travelled from all over the world including Hong Kong, Turkey, the UK, Italy, Sweden and Switzerland to attend the camp with Joe Friel and TrainingBible Coaching UK’s Will Newbery. Everyone received individual coaching and video analysis from Joe Friel & Will Newbery as well as a transition workshop master class from Will Newbery and open water swim skills in the beautiful Mediterranean Sea.

Run skills and video analysis took place on the track allowing athletes to perfect their run technique receiving instant video feedback from Joe Friel. According to Martin at Tri Dynamic, the main advantage of a Tri Dynamic Camp is the amount of individual coaching that triathletes receive with Joe Friel personally leading all workouts, always available and happy to answer any questions and have his brain picked.

The riding in the region took in some amazing local terrain with stunning scenery and equally challenging hills. The group was accompanied by expert local guides throughout the week taking in some of the best routes in the area as well as some of the most dramatic café and gelato stops! The athletes covered some 400-500K on the bike taking in hilly 80-120 rides most days with swim workouts taking place at the nearby 50m indoor pool, which in addition to the new outdoor 50m pool will play host to the World Masters Swimming Champs in Riccione next month.

Another highlight of the week for the athletes was to have an evening presentation and dinner with Gordo Byrn who co-wrote ‘Going Long’ with Joe Friel and owns coaching firm Endurance Corner. Gordo’s presentation gave the athletes plenty to think about and like all the coaching on the week meant the camp participants returned home knowing how to train and race smarter.

Athletes received a goodie bag with PowerBar nutrition to keep them going through the week, a Skinfit technical t-shirt and special offers from Official Partners Blue Competition Cycles, TheTriTouch, CycleOps Power and blueseventy. All the athletes’ needs were met with an abundance of local fresh food on offer, local mechanics on hand and door-to-door laundry deliveries each day after daily rides.

The next Tri Dynamic camp is the Lanzarote Tri Camp on 8-15 September, with Elite Coach Jim Vance, a former 8.37 Ironman pro and current US National Elite Duathlon Coach. Meanwhile, October’s Kona Quest with Joe Friel is a unique experience for athletes to benefit from triathlon legend Joe Friel’s experience and training expertise in Kona, Hawaii during race week at the Ironman World Championships 2012.
