Kestrel Bicycles has confirmed its sponsorship of 24 year old Iraqi war veteran Logan Franks – who, upon returning from duty in 2009, managed to not only qualify for the 2010 Ironman World Championships but ran Kona’s fastest American marathon.
“I was drawn to Kestrel because I think they have a lot of pride in being an American company,” said Franks, who served as a turret gunner while stationed in Iraq. “And then the 4000… it’s a speed demon, and I’ve never felt so comfortable. It’s like my little home; I could sit on this thing forever.”
Kestrel Brand Manager Steve Harad first discovered Franks when he was on the cover of Lava magazine and knew immediately that he wanted this ‘rock star’ representing his brand.
“I come from a military family, and service to our country means a lot to me,” said Harad. “Guy comes back from duty and jumps in and races. He’s bad ass, and I really believe in him. Having him represent Kestrel is something that makes sense to me.
It’s been quite a journey for Franks, who just two years ago had never raced a triathlon in his life and is now regarded as one of the most promising athletes in the sport. Franks also has no intentions of slowing down.
“In five years, I want to be top-ten in the Ironman World Championships. I want to be World Champion by 35,” added Franks. “And I’m going to be.”
