American elite triathletes will have three opportunities to compete on their home soil in draft-legal International Triathlon Union (ITU) Pan American Cup events – while also chasing US$50,000 in prize money – during the 2013 season.
The fast and furious ITU race action kicks off on back-to-back, early-season weekends in Florida. The Clermont (Florida) Sprint ITU Triathlon Pan American Cup is slated for 9 March 2013, followed by the Olympic-distance Sarasota (Florida) ITU Triathlon Pan American Cup on 16 March 2013.
As noted by national governing body USA Triathlon (USAT), racing on consecutive weekends in such close proximity will give competing athletes the opportunity to train locally in between events to minimize travel. It will also provide the chance to earn valuable ITU rankings points in advance of the 18-20 April ITU World Triathlon San Diego event.
The final 2013 ITU Pan American Cup in the US will be the Olympic-distance Dallas ITU Triathlon Pan American Cup on 1 June 2013.
In addition to the elite international races, all three events will host age-group races, giving amateurs the opportunity to compete in the same venues as top ITU pros.
The Clermont event will host a draft-legal Under-25 Elite Development Race (ages 16-25) and a Youth F1 race (ages 12-16), as well as an age-group sprint race.
Sarasota will stage an age-group Mixed Team Relay race, while Dallas will host a Youth F1 race, as well as age-group Olympic, sprint and ‘My First Tri’ races.
