Decathlon and Speedo splash out for swimming

Veteran Olympians are set to ‘take the plunge’ at an exciting swimming event in Southampton, England, this coming weekend, organised by sports retailer Decathlon and partnered with specialist swim brand Speedo.

On Saturday, the ‘Big Summer Splash’ gets under way hosted by 2004 Olympic Bronze Medalist Steve Parry, in which every participant will get the chance to try out a whole host of different activities. Ideal for junior triathletes aged between 7-11, this day is positioned as a great opportunity to find out more about the sport of swimming and to learn about the foundations of good technique.

Sunday’s event is called the ‘Get Speedo Fit’ day, and is designed for adults and over 16s. Here, participants will have the opportunity to try out a comprehensive range of Speedo products and take part in three 30 minute sessions focusing on either; technique, speed/endurance, strength and power.

Commonwealth Champion Adam Whitehead and London 2012 Olympian and GB Mens Waterpolo Captain Craig Figes will be attending the two free swimming training sessions at The Quays Swimming and Diving Complex in Southampton, and will host a range of activities as well as offering exclusive tips and training advice.

Adam Whitehead said “I’m really excited to have been invited along this weekend. The event is all about swimming – and even though my competition days are long behind me, I’m still really motivated to inspire the next generation.

“Swimming is an all-body workout, involving speed, stamina and endurance and is a fantastic means to increase your lung capacity. It is also one of the most accessible forms of exercise and can be done by anyone regardless of their age, weight, background or ability, alone or with their family and friends. It has huge health and well-being benefits and is a skill that can save lives.”

John Butcher, Marketing Director at Decathlon said “We are organising this event to help raise awareness of the sport of swimming; for those who are only just starting out, right through to those who want to refine and develop their technique. It’s a perfect event for triathletes, as swimming is quite often the neglected discipline in many training regimes and good technique is directly paralleled with good performance. We hope to see you all down there!”

Participants can try out training aids from the new Speedo Swim fitness range such as snorkels, flippers and kickboards and there will be a number of giveaways from both Decathlon and Speedo across both days.

There are a limited number of places up for grabs at the two-day event and tickets will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

The teams from Speedo and Decathlon will also be visiting the North West, starting in Warrington on 27-28 July followed by Stockport on 3-4 August.
