As one of few Olympic distance triathlon events scheduled this year in the northern Lazio region, the Lake Vico Triathlon will take place amongst some of the most beautiful scenery in central Italy.
The Lake Vico triathlon (1500m swim, 37K bike, 9.6K run) is scheduled for Sunday 16 June, and will attract some of the strongest athletes on the national tri scene in Italy. The multi-lap course is entirely closed to traffic.
The Lake Vico Triathlon is forged from an agreement between the event’s organisers, the Forhans Team, and the local municipal authority. “I am convinced that organizing events like this is a great way to promote and raise awareness of our region,” explained Councillor for Tourism Fabio Troncarelli.
“The area surrounding Lake Vico, as well as being a fantastic natural habitat, seems designed specifically for the development of the triathlon. We want to grow this event in the coming years. We believe we can organize top level racing and, hand in hand, welcome athletes from all over Italy and beyond.”
According to legend, Lake Vico was created by Hercules, who defied the local inhabitants to wield his club. When he did this, a stream sprung up and formed the lake. Lake Vico itself occupies the central caldera of Vico Volcano, a volcanic cone that was built up in a series of eruptions that occurred 250,000 to 300,000 years ago. Surrounded by the Cimini Hills, it is one of the highest major Italian lakes, with an altitude of 510m.
“Athletes start with a circular 750m swim, to be done twice,” said Chairman of Forhans Team Gianluca Calfapietra. “Then the competing triathletes will cycle on a circuit of 12.5K, which is repeated three times; and finally they face the run section which is three 3.2K laps.
“The multi-lap format not only enables the organising team to ensure the utmost safety of athletes, but it also makes for an even more spectacular triathlon. For the general public and dedicated fans & spectators, all will be able to enjoy the exploits of all athletes and their friends and family.”
To encourage the promotion of the event and tourism in the local region, the event’s organization is fully supported by the local tourism department, which has prepared a series of agreements with B&Bs, hotels and other accommodation in the area.
The race will also be valid for the PowerBar Forhans Cup circuit, now in its tenth edition in 2013, and bringing triathlon to thousands of fans and athletes in Italy throughout the year.
