Further details on new Triathlon Ontario race fee structure

World Endurance Canada (WEC) – the company behind the Subaru Triathlon Series – has released further details to help clarify the new day licence fee structure in Ontario. This new structure for athletes across the region has been agreed with MultiSport Canada – the company behind the Recharge With Milk Triathlon Series – and the Provincial Governing Body, Triathlon Ontario.

Background
In previous years all athletes paid a race entry fee plus a C$6 License Fee to the Provincial Governing Body, Triathlon Ontario, formerly OAT (Ontario Association of Triathletes). This C$6 fee covered triathletes’ one-day licence and insurance for the day of the event.

The exception was athletes who paid an annual Triathlon Ontario membership fee of C$45. These athletes were eligible to race in any triathlon or duathlon in Ontario without paying any extra one-day licensing fees. All of these Licence Fees were in addition to the race entry fees charged to put on the actual races.

Late last year, Triathlon Ontario proposed an increase to the Triathlon Ontario One-Day Licence Fee from C$6 to C$10 per athlete, per race, and an increase in annual membership fees to $55.

World Endurance Canada/Subaru Triathlon Series and MultiSport Canada/Recharge With Milk Triathlon Series objected to the increase in the one-day fees. These companies’ respective series decided to work collaboratively with Triathlon Ontario, so that they could continue to support the Provincial Governing Body and still give good value to all participating athletes.

Over the last 3 months, both series have worked with Triathlon Ontario to come up with what is seen as a reasonable alternative. The organisations believe the new Series Limited Triathlon Ontario Race License Fee provides good value to athletes who race more than once a year, but do not want to become members of Triathlon Ontario.

Series Limited Triathlon Ontario Race License Fee
Both of the main race series’ in Ontario are working together to ensure the best interests of customers/athletes and the sport are met. Accordingly, the series organisers have arranged with Triathlon Ontario for each race series to have a Limited Triathlon Ontario One-Day Race License Fee.

‘Limited’ means within each individual race, whether with the Subaru Triathlon Series (World Endurance Canada) or Recharge With Milk (MultiSport Canada), but not both.

This means athletes will be charged a race entry fee, plus C$10 for the first race entered in each series. So, for example, an athlete may register with an event in the Subaru Triathlon Series, and pay the Series Limited Triathlon Ontario Race License Fee of C$10. If that athlete chooses to race again in the Subaru Series they will not have to pay the C$10 Triathlon Ontario One-Day Race License Fee a second time.

Therefore, if entering into 2 races it works out at C$5 per race plus race entry fees; 4 races equates to C$2.50 per race plus race entry fees, etc. This compares to 2012 where athletes had to pay a standard C$6 Triathlon Ontario License Fee for each race.

For any athletes who are members of Triathlon Ontario, they will not pay any race day license fees other than the annual fee of C$55.

Where does the money go?
These Triathlon Ontario Race License Fees do not go to the race series. Triathlon Ontario Race License Fees go directly to Triathlon Ontario. The funds are used to sanction the races, provide officials and pay head office administrative overheads. Further details about race sanctioning and how the fees are spent can be found on the Triathlon Ontario website.

The organisations and regional governing body would like to point out that Ontario has the least expensive race event fees for triathlon events in North America, along with the least expensive Provincial Governing Body (Triathlon Ontario) association License Fees. (In Quebec and BC the Provincial Governing Bodies charge a minimum of C$15 per event.)

Both World Endurance Canada and MultiSport Canada have worked throughout the last few months to keep the costs to race in Ontario down and provide athletes with the best possible value for the racing dollar!

Series Limited Triathlon Ontario One-Day Race License Examples

  • In previous years, if athletes were signing up for 2 or more races with the Subaru Triathlon Series they would have paid a C$6 Triathlon Ontario One-Day Race License Fee, for each race entered. That meant two races would have added C$12 in Triathlon Ontario License Fees, three races C$18, 4 races C$24 etc.
  • This year if an athlete registers for the Milton Triathlon but is not a yearly Triathlon Ontario member, he or she will be charged the C$10 Triathlon Ontario One-Day Race License Fee when they register. Payment of this C$10 fee will now allow the athlete to race in any subsequent race in the Subaru Triathlon Series, without having to pay that C$10 License Fee again in 2013.
  • If the athlete registers for a subsequent race, the registration system will be able to verify that he or she will have already paid the Limited Triathlon Ontario Race License Fee and the athlete will be exempt from paying the Limited Triathlon Ontario Race License Fee again throughout the year. Here, the athlete will only pay race entry fees for each race entered.

Subaru Triathlon Series and Recharge With Milk Triathlon Series Example

  • If an athlete plans on racing 3 x Subaru Series events and 2 x Recharge With Milk event, the yearly Triathlon Ontario Race License Fees will be C$10 per Series, or a total of C$20. This allows athletes to race across the two series for the entire year. In 2012, the total paid in day licences would have been C30, so 2013 sees a saving of C$10 in One-Day License fees compared to last year.
