Leading UK mass-participation sports events company, Human Race has shared the news that Jasmine Flatters, a member of the company for over 20 years – and a renowned, respected and unanimously liked name within the global triathlon industry – has been awarded the ITU Women’s Committee Award of Excellence 2013.
The annual award honours individuals who inspire with their drive, leadership, creativity and commitment to advancing women in triathlon. It is intended to profile outstanding meritorious contributions advancing women in triathlon and to celebrate and recognize excellence in leadership specific to facilitating inclusion of women in all facets of triathlon.
Jasmine said of the award, “This is such a great honour. I have been involved in this wonderful sport for the best part of 25 years, in many guises. From volunteer marshal, age group team manager, through various positions on committees and boards, roles in event management and last year I really thought that nothing could better my involvement in London 2012.”
She continued, “Triathlon has always promoted and supported women in the sport, with equal prize money for the athletes, women on committees and Executive Boards, women technical officials and women encouraged to attend ITU Congress. There are so many inspirational women in the sport right now, that to be even counted amongst them is a great achievement. But to be singled out for this award is truly beyond expectation.
“In some ways it seems wrong to be awarded for doing something I love. But I am delighted to have been given the recognition and this magnificent award takes pride of place at home! I hope I can continue to inspire other women to become involved in this great sport at every level.”
Jasmine has been an exemplar role model for women in triathlon throughout her triathlon career, both professionally and as a volunteer. She has been a popular and successful GB Age Group Team Manager and she was the main architect of the GB Age Group qualification process when it began in the late 1990s.
Her GB Age Group Team Manager role has taken her around the world from New Zealand to Canada, from Australia to Mexico. She has seen the age group teams grow in size from under 100 to over 500 per team, with combined sprint and Olympic teams in excess of 1,000 at London this year.
Jasmine was the first woman to become a Board Member on the Executive Board of British Triathlon in 2000. Continuously elected to the Board every time she stood for election, she then went on to Chair British Triathlon from 2004 to 2007. She led the modernisation of the sport in Britain, changing the governing body from an Association to a Federation and setting up Triathlon England.
During this time Jasmine signed the first major sponsorship deal for British Triathlon with Corus, a FTSE 100 company and a further highlight included presenting to the IOC Evaluation Commission in Hyde Park in February 2005 during the bid for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
After several years as a leading Technical Official, she became the first woman from Britain to be made the Technical Delegate of a major continental competition, the ITU World Duathon Championships in 2008. Since then she has been Technical Delegate for a number of international events across Europe including European Championships and European Cups.
Professionally, one of Jasmine’s greatest career highlights came last year when she played a major role in the delivery of the triathlon competitions at the London 2012 Olympic Games acting as Triathlon Services Manager and leading teams responsible for Athlete Services, International Federation and Technical Official Services, Sport Information, Training Venues and Administration.
She was also responsible for communications with and motivation of all 600 Triathlon Games Maker volunteers.
Through all of the above Jasmine remained a key figure in driving the growth of Human Race, which now boasts the UK’s largest portfolio of mass participation sports events. Jasmine served as a company director for several years and has been responsible for the planning, organisation, management and conduct of the administration functions of its multisport events including triathlons, duathlons, running races and open water swimming events.
She was instrumental in starting the Windsor Triathlon alongside founder John Lunt 23 years ago and has been race director of that event ever since.
Human Race is ‘the UK’s largest and most diverse mass participation events company’; owning and delivering over 50 events in triathlon, cycling, running, duathlon and open water swimming for over 50,000 participants of all abilities and ages each year.
