The Ironman Foundation Community Fund will give US$70,000 in direct grant funding to initiatives in the greater Mont-Tremblant community as part of the Ironman North American Championship at the Subaru Ironman Mont-Tremblant triathlon.
(Last October, Ironman brand owner World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) and officials from the city of Mont-Tremblant in Quebec, Canada, announced that Ironman Mont-Tremblant has been officially designated as the Ironman North American Championship in 2013 and 2014.)
The inaugural Ironman Mont-Tremblant, held on 19 August 2012, received rave reviews from many of the athletes, their families, the community and organizers alike. The race features the scenic countryside of the province of Quebec, and the ski village flair of the world-renowned Tremblant Resort, offering an international-style experience that is unique to the North American continent.
The Ironman Foundation’s contribution will provide support to non-profit needs and initiatives within the local community. Including donations from the Ironman Foundation in 2013, a total of over US$122,000 has been given to support the needs of the community since the first Ironman Mont-Tremblant event in 2012.
The Ironman Foundation will donate US$50,000 to support the development of a multi-purpose aquatics center in Mont-Tremblant. Additionally, the Foundation will provide a US$2,500 grant to local Police and Fire departments to obtain equipment necessary to help support local events such as the Subaru Ironman Mont-Tremblant triathlon.
This also marks the inaugural year for the Ironman Foundation Newton Running Triathlon Team. The goal of the team is to have athletes share the concept of ‘service through sport and commitment to community.’ A total of 44 athletes were recruited from North America to represent the team and share the goodwill of giving back to the community.
Five members will be representing the team in Mont-Tremblant and have identified La Maison de la famille du Nord as a beneficiary of their team. These team members will be participating in a community service project today, on 15 August, in Mont-Tremblant to help with the restoration of two rooms in the community center.
Additionally, the foundation team will support La Maison de la famille du Nord with a donation of funds raised by the team members to be used toward completing the restoration. The donation will be in the range of US$6,000.
The Ironman Foundation also provides registered athletes with the platform to fundraise for the Foundation or a non-profit beneficiary of their choice as they train for their Ironman event. More than 220 athletes are registered as Ironman Foundation athletes for Subaru Ironman Mont-Tremblant and many have signed up to participate in The Ironman Foundation’s ‘Your Journey, Your Cause’ initiative.
Through their participation with the Foundation these athletes have been touched by something greater than themselves and are giving back to non-profit organizations to make their race experiences more than just about crossing the finish line – they are racing for a cause. Collectively they have raised over US$140,000 for their respective causes.
The Ironman Foundation featured athlete for Mont-Tremblant is Ian Laperriere, a former NHL player originally from Montreal who has raised more than US$10,000 to benefit The Ironman Foundation, as well as the Ronald McDonald House, the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation and Go4theGoal Foundation – Tunes4Teens.
