The International Triathlon Union (ITU) has opened bidding for three ITU World Multisport World Championship events, in addition to all multisport races in 2016. The opportunities include:
- 2014 Winter Triathlon World Championships
- 2015 Winter Triathlon World Championships
- 2015 Cross Triathlon World Championships
- All Multisport events for 2016
“Multisports are integral to the growth of triathlon, as they promote triathlon’s key messages to more people,” said ITU President and IOC Member Marisol Casado. “Hosting a world championship event has proven to be a great opportunity for cities to build awareness of their community with an event that can generate a financial surplus, while also promoting a healthy lifestyle.”
Cities interested in hosting an event must submit their bid prior to ITU by 15 August 2013. The winning cities will be announced on 16 September.
The requirements for hosting a Multisport World Championship race are available to download online – as are the conditions for hosting a multisport events race.
In tandem with its drive for the sport of triathlon specifically, ITU has continued to support winter triathlon, cross triathlon, duathlon and other multisport event initiatives.
In 2012, the organisation confirmed a trio of host cities for three Multisport World Championships in 2014 and 2015. These were the 2014 ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships, which were awarded to Zittau, Germany; the 2015 ITU Duathlon World Championships, which will be hosted by Adelaide, Australia; and the 2015 ITU Long Distance Triathlon to be held in Motala, Sweden.
ITU also notes that bid applications for ITU Long Distance Triathlon or duathlon events that are not a world championship race will be accepted until 31 October of the preceding year.
