The Let’s Tri series has been unveiled as a new Olympic distance triathlon in the heart of the Spanish Balearic Island of Ibiza. Held on 26 October, Let’s Tri Ibiza is positioned as a challenging event to finish up the 2013 tri season – with ‘racing in a natural paradise and the coolest place to perform and to have fun after the event.’
After 1K of swimming in the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea, competitors will take on a beautiful single loop 40K bike ride through Ibiza’s scenic hinterland. The 10K run will take athletes around streets in the historic city centre of Ibiza town, passing through all the main monuments.
Ibiza – sometimes referred to as ‘the white island’ – was the in the past the capital of the hippy movement in Europe. It is now well known for its biodiversity and culture whilst hosting cool parties in its clubs and offering small coves, beaches and sunsets.
Throughout the 18 kilometres of natural sandy beaches, fringed by crystal clear waters, Ibiza offers a huge range of possibilities to cater for all types of preferences. On the majority of its beaches, there is the chance to take on a range of water and outdoor sports. For those who enjoy hill walking or rambling, the Ibizan coast is seen as an ideal place to spend time.
Moreover, many of these beaches are not only of great natural beauty but also have a historic worth in that there are many remains of past civilisations, old defence towers and other signs of the island’s past history that are of great interest.
The Balearic Islands are seen as an ideal venue to host the next stop of the new Let’s Tri series. Triathlon continues to build momentum in Europe; and Mallorca and Ibiza are key destination spots for German, Austrian, British, Dutch and other nationalities.
Tapping into this mindset the Spanish islands offer opportunities for athletes who want to go for long training sessions or just ideal conditions to race. Let’s Tri offers a wide range of events, just for fun or for performance, for beginners and for experienced athletes alike ‘who love to compete in awesome natural settings and demanding courses.’
The first tri race of the Let’s Tri season got under way on 8-9 June via the popular Triathlon Sprint Ciutat de Palma (in the city centre of Palma). The next series event was on 27 July – the Aquathlon CN Arenal in the well-known triathlete/swimming international training centre of El Arenal.
These events will be followed by the Triathlon de Pollença, on 28 September, which is the flagship of the Let’s Tri series, with ‘a demanding and beautiful course’. Triathlon de Pollença will be hosted in the village of Pollença, located in the north of Mallorca. This is positioned as a perfect venue for a demanding bike course, similar to that of the Ironman 70.3 Mallorca event: with a 56K cycling leg around Pollença, Lluc, Selva, Campanet and Pollença. Before the bike segment, athletes have to swim 1.9K in the scenic Mediterranean sea, close to the port.
The Triathlon de Pollença run course is also a tough one, with some trail running and a hilly profile to the spectacular finish line in this picturesque village.
Overall, more than 2,000 triathletes will race at least one of the new Let’s Tri events in 2013.
