Over 1,100 athletes are set to race at the British Age Group Sprint Distance Triathlon Championships in Nottingham on 1 June 2013. Giving it particular kudos, the event has been selected as an age group qualifier for the PruHealth World Triathlon Grand Final London on 11-15 September in Hyde Park, London.
The sprint distance event will see competitors swim 750m in the well-marked regatta lake at the National Water Sports Centre. They’ll cycle 20K on a four-lap flat course around the lake and finally run one 5K lap of the complex to finish in front of the grandstand.
Competitors will compete in age group waves throughout the day, challenging for the title of National Age Group Champion, as well as attempting to qualify for the World Championships in London.
The unique opportunity for amateur athletes to race at the London 2012 Olympic triathlon venue has already attracted unprecedented interest from age group athletes across the country.
Race organiser, Iain Hamilton of One Step Beyond is looking forward to another successful day of competition: “We’ve been holding triathlon events at the National Water Sports Centre for 22 years, so it’s a popular and well used venue.
“We’re expecting good weather and a real festival atmosphere with wave starts running all day. We also have the Outlaw Half Triathlon on Sunday so there should be a real buzz about the place.”
He added: “The course is flat, fast and traffic free. It’s ideal for head to head racing, which is exactly what you would expect at a national championship event.”
The event commences at 07.30 GMT with further waves throughout the day at 09.45, 12.00, 14.15 and 16.40. Spectators are invited to take advantage of the ample free car parking or easy access to the venue by bike; and there will be an event expo on site.
