Milestone, a company offering technology products to active individuals, has introduced a tiny foot pod that attaches to running shoes to track mileage. The company has also launched a campaign on Indiegogo, the flexible crowd funding site, to raise funds for mass production of the MilestonePod. The campaign runs through to 31 January 2013 and the company aims to raise US$60,000 or more.
The MilestonePod was developed by a team of committed athletes, technologists and entrepreneurs. As they trained for various road races and triathlons, they noticed that despite using GPS watches, mobile training apps and other running peripherals, there were some missing data points they could not easily track – including how many miles had been put on a specific pair of running shoes.
Knowing the importance of replacing their shoes every 400-600 miles to avoid risk of injury, they set to work on developing a low cost, high value sensor, targeting the casual and competitive running and walking markets.
“We’re excited to bring this affordable device to runners, walkers and triathletes,” said Jason Kaplan, President of Milestone. “Unfortunately many of us are guilty of running far beyond the recommended mileage for our shoes… When asked about when they purchase new shoes, too many runners respond ‘when my knee hurts’. We believe that if you can avoid a costly injury by investing a mere US$14.95 to provide guidance on when to replace your shoes, then it is well worth the investment.”
In addition to tracking running shoe mileage, the MilestonePod also stores vital information that a first responder should know, such as blood type, medical history and personal identification, in the USB enabled device. This can also eliminate the need to remember to wear an ID bracelet or carry an ID card.
