Pro triathlete Nick Baldwin joins firefly ambassador team

2012 Ironman 70.3 Age Group World Champion and up-and-coming pro triathlete Nick Baldwin, has joined the firefly ambassador team – to help expand the UK based, electro-stimulation and sports recovery specialist business.

Looking to excel in Ironman events, with the ultimate ambition of winning the Ironman World Championships and Ironman 70.3 World Championships, Nick Baldwin is always seeking competitive advantage over his peers.

As a professional triathlete training over 30 hours per week, optimising recovery in between workouts is every bit as important as the training itself. Baldwin said “Athletes in all sports can attest to the importance of recovery; I’m always looking for that added advantage over my competition, and with firefly I’ve found it.”

1 July 2013 sees the introduction of the firefly device, positioned as ‘the ideal sports recovery tool for athletes at all levels.’ The size of a wrist-watch and worn behind the knee, the firefly device is small, light and comfortable to wear (weighing just 16g). firefly delivers painless electrical impulses to the common peroneal nerve to activate the muscles of the lower leg that return blood towards the heart.

The recovery device mimics the blood flow rate of walking – shown to be up to 70% – without having to move or exert energy.

Nick Baldwin joins British Olympic triathlete Vicky Holland as one of the many elite professionals championing firefly. Vicky Holland said “I use firefly after training and competition, without fail, along with my compression stockings. It eases heavy legs post-race and is excellent for recovery during travel on long haul flights.”

She added, “I travel extensively for training and competitions, so when I touch down I need to be in the best form for my next session. It’s quick and simple to apply, no wires, no leads and being lightweight I can carry it in my kit bag with ease – so remains a key part of my recovery strategy.”

The firefly device increases lower limb blood circulation ‘for the accelerated removal of metabolic waste immediately after high-exertion exercise.’ The compact and highly portable device is claimed to be capable of reducing delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) within 24 hours.

Where other electro-stimulation devices can be cumbersome and difficult to set-up, the self-contained firefly device, with no wires or leads, provides simplicity and a design that is both sleek and unique. Baldwin continued, “firefly has quickly become a key part of my recovery regime, ensuring that I’m ready for the next day’s training.”

Nick Baldwin already has a wealth of qualifications and awards to his name. These include:

  • International Diploma in Advanced Personal Training
  • 2012 Triathlete of the Year, as voted by Beyond Going Long readers
  • Shortlisted as Male Age Group Triathlete of the Year in 220 Triathlon Awards
  • 2012 Ironman World Championships, Hawaii, Age Group placing 2nd (overall 40th)
  • 2012 Ironman 70.3 World Championships, Vegas, Age Group placing 1st (overall 35th)
