Pacific Sports LLC has launched the inaugural Brooklyn Triathlon in historic Coney Island – taking place on Sunday 10 November 2013. Space is limited to 1,500 registrants, with registration opening on 22 April.
Everyone entering code ‘BROOKLYNSOCKS13’ during the registration process will receive a complimentary pair of Brooklyn Triathlon socks from Champion System. The event is sanctioned by USA Triathlon (USAT).
The Brooklyn Triathlon marks the first-ever triathlon in Coney Island and the first major triathlon in the borough of Brooklyn, New York City. Sprint and Olympic distance competition is being offered with age group categories starting at 14 years old to 80+, as well as Clydesdale (200+ lbs) men and Athena women (145+ lbs). There is also an elite amateur division, which requires a race resume be submitted to the race director.
The swim-bike-run route starts on an L-shaped course in the Atlantic Ocean at Coney Island Beach and Raritan Bay, then cycles through the heart of Brooklyn, racing portions of Surf Ave, Ocean Pkwy, Neptune Ave and Shell Rd. The race finishes on the famous Riegelmann Boardwalk near the home of the Brooklyn Cyclones’ MCU Park after a run through the iconic ‘People’s Playground’ of Coney Island.
Event producers plan to celebrate everything “Brooklyn” during the event, from participant food to local tri clubs. As Brooklyn maintains a distinct culture and many Brooklyn neighbourhoods are ethnic enclaves where particular ethnic groups and cultures predominate, the Brooklyn Triathlon can easily evoke a unique and exciting international theme to be enjoyed by participants and spectators.
Working in partnership with the Alliance for Coney Island Inc, the inaugural Brooklyn Triathlon is another component of the continuing transformation of Coney Island into a year-round, world-class recreational oceanfront destination. Competitors will have an unparalleled opportunity to see the sites and tread the boards of this unique and internationally-recognized seaside destination.
