London’s iconic Trafalgar Square is being transformed into ‘Triathlon Square’ from Thursday 12 September to Sunday 15 September in celebration of the Grand Final of the ITU World Triathlon Series arriving in the UK capital.
Members of the public are invited to come and watch and even take part in a whole host of activities taking place in Triathlon Square including daily stage shows, triathlon competitions and the best of the live action on big screens.
Ian Braid, Director for Major and National Events at British Triathlon said “London 2012 produced so many stunning moments for Britain to enjoy, and amongst the most enduring memories were those that unfolded in Hyde Park during the triathlon events.
“Now a year on from the dramatic finish that saw Alistair Brownlee clinch gold, leading home his younger brother Jonathan with bronze, the stage for sporting splendour will again be set in the heart of city.
“Once more, the sporting action in Hyde Park between September 11 and 15 is free to enjoy, and this year we have transformed Trafalgar Square into Triathlon Square to help generate a carnival atmosphere around the PruHealth World Triathlon Grand Final London.
“London 2012 left us with a great sporting legacy, and we hope to get as many families, children and fans engaged in the sport.
“We take great pride in putting on a show in London, and we hope to make this Grand Final event – which will see the finest elite, age-group and paratriathletes from across the world come together – the biggest in history.”
As the racing kicks off in Hyde Park, Triathlon Square will encourage families, sports fans and members of the public looking to enjoy a day out to get involved by hitting the water in the endless pool, hopping onto static bikes and running on treadmills in the Triathlon England ‘live site’.
The British Triathlon Foundation Trust will host a specially designed kids triathlon for 8 to 14-year-olds and there will be a gallery of triathlon photos on display, presented by Threadneedle Asset Management.
Virtual races will also be played out on stage and shown on the big screens. Specialized will host active bikes on turbo trainers, where participants are invited to jump in the saddle, strap on an aero helmet and race for the chance to win £500.
The new Vauxhall Ampera electric car will be on display with the public having the opportunity to recharge the batteries by riding static bikes in support of Westminster Council’s Go Green campaign for a more sustainable London.
