After ‘months of negotiations and planning’, the Rocketman Florida 2014 triathlon is a go for launch on Sunday 12 October 2014.
The Rocketman Florida Triathlon is the only privately coordinated sporting event ever held on the Kennedy Space Center and has been permitted and approved by NASA, the US Fish & Wildlife Service, the National Park Service and the city of Titusville.
The total field of the race is limited to 1,000 athletes, and registration opened on Saturday 1 March.
The 2014 event follows the successful inaugural race that was held in May 2013. That event was a finalist in several categories of the Triathlon Business International (TBI) Worldwide Triathlete’s Choice awards; including Best Race, Bucket List race and Most Scenic race course.
In 2013, the Rocketman Triathlon offered three separate race distances – Classic +, International +, and Half Iron – with each featuring a stunning bike ride inside the secured gates of the Kennedy Space Center and around all of America’s major space program landmarks.
In 2014, and again open to a limited field, athletes will compete in a Classic + and an International + distance – with each featuring a stunning bike ride inside the secured gates of the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) and around all of America’s major space program landmarks.
The KSC portion of the bike ride is more than 15 miles long and is sandwiched between equally beautiful scenery – with the remainder of the route on the Canaveral National Seashore and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.
The ‘+’ aspect of the Classic and International distance rides is due to the extra bicycle distance necessary to get all triathletes out and around the two Space Shuttle launch pads. Rather than the standard 19-mile and 24.8 mile bike distances, those athletes will instead both ride a bike course of approximately 32 miles.
The start, finish and transition area for The Rocketman will be at the Astronaut Hall of Fame.
