Running legend Dr Ron Hill MBE will be inviting runners to join him in a web chat and a run to celebrate a remarkable achievement – next Saturday (20 December) he will have run every day for the past 50 years.
To mark his five decades on foot, Ron Hill, who is an ambassador for Sports Tours International, and has taken part in many of its organised running events, will be taking over the company’s Twitter account on Thursday 18 December.
Any running related questions about Ron’s 50 years of running can be sent to the Twitter handle @sportstoursint using the hash tag #AskRon, and Ron will answer them on Thursday afternoon (UK time).
Following that, Ron will take part in Heaton Park’s 5K Park Run on the morning of Saturday 20 December.
Dr Ron, who lives in Hyde, Cheshire, said “I’m more than happy to be celebrating chatting to runners in the web chat and at Park Run. There’s usually a big crowd taking part in the runs and I’m looking forward to the runners joining me.”
Having run almost 160,000 miles, which is the equivalent of running round the world more than six times, 76 year old Ron still runs every day.
After starting his running career in 1953, Ron has represented Britain in the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, Mexico in 1968 and Munich in 1972, and gone on to achieve a variety of personal bests including being the first Briton to win the Boston Marathon in 1970, and in the same year, he set the world record for the best marathon time of 2:09:28 at Edinburgh’s Commonwealth Games.
Through some testing times, from being involved in an unfortunate car incident where his sternum broke, to undergoing surgery on his foot, Ron has still managed to take to his feet for his daily run and shows no signs of stopping.
Chris Bird, CEO of Sports Tours International, said “Dr Ron Hill is one of the country’s greatest marathon runners and a true inspiration. Even when he’s been unwell, it hasn’t let it stop him taking his daily run, even running a mile a day in a plaster cast for six weeks. It’s an incredible achievement to be proud of.”
