Triathlon de Portocolom again ‘triathlon of the year’ in the Balearics

Triathlon de Portocolom has now been named the ‘Best Triathlon Event of the Year’, for two consecutive years by the Balearic Triathlon Federation. This follows a vote by local athletes, who once again considered this event as a perfect race to start the season in Mallorca.

The 17th edition of the Balearic triathlon was officially awarded its triathlon of the year honours by local Balearic triathletes and the regional Triathlon Federation at a recent annual meeting in Mallorca, Spain – an event where Olympic triathlete Mario Mola was also recognised for his achievements.

The next edition of Triathlon Portocolom is on 12 April 2015 in Portocolom, Mallorca, and registration for the races over 55.5K and 111K are already open on the website triathlonportocolom.com.

To optimise racing conditions and the tough double bike ascent to Sant Salvador, the number of participants in 2015 will be limited to 1,000 (500 slots for each race).

In addition, for 2015, Triathlon de Portocolom has unveiled the prize money offered to professional triathletes: with €4,000 shared among the top-3 ranked athletes in both formats (55.5K and 111K).

Triathlon Internacional de Portocolom is one of the earliest triathlon races in Europe every season and is positioned as a perfect spot to start training due to the weather conditions in Mallorca in spring. On 12 April 2015, Portocolom hosts the 18th edition of this successful and popular Spanish event. The 111K format involves: 1K swimming, 100K cycling and 10Km running – with the distances halved for the 55.5K event format.

Both races over 111K and 55.5K will take athletes on the same course as in 2014. 111K participants will do two loops of each triathlon stage while 55.5K athletes will complete only one.

The swim will take place in Portocolom’s harbour; the bike loop will take athletes along a rolling course including the spectacular climb of Sant Salvador, well known by thousands of triathletes and cyclists who avisit Mallorca each year, with its 494m height and awesome views towards the island and the southeast coast.

The run will take athletes from the old town along the beaches of Portocolom Bay before they cross the finish line. 800 triathletes from 20 countries enjoyed this ‘demanding and fun triathlon’ event in 2014.

Across both races, the event is aiming to offer a high quality experience to the participating triathletes, including: athletes’ bag-goodies, side events such as the Expo and the Awards Ceremony, and the TriKids Duathlon for kids, on Saturday 11 April.

Portocolom, located in the southern half of the east coast of the Balearic island of Mallorca, about 70km from Palma, in one of the earliest triathlon events of the European season and the bike ascent to Sant Salvador is noted as one of the most interesting spots to test the early season form of participating triathletes.
