Skater-cyclist motion comes ‘alive’ with Nikola 2.0 pedals

Nikola Pedals verson 2.0

Nikola Pedals, the ‘revolutionary road bike pedal that combines the movements of a skater and cyclist into one smooth motion’, has announced that its version 2.0 pedals are now available for purchase at www.nikolainnovation.com.

Introduced in late 2014, Nikola’s founder Nick Stevovich studied and incorporated the motion of speed skaters and cyclists into a new technology called ‘ZIVO’, which has Serbian origination meaning ‘alive’.

According to Nikola, this patented pedal motion provides 25mm of lateral movement on the spindle, creates comfort with riders’ knees and hips with its patented Synchronized Q-factor generated by ZIVO as well as producing peak power improvement of 7% in 30-second Wingate tests and an efficiency improvement of 2.1%.

Stevovich said Nikola embraced the feedback of nearly 1,000 users in bringing Nikola 2.0 enrichments to this new version of the road bike pedals.

Nikola points to a number of highlights of the Nikola 2.0 pedals:

  • Aluminium version is 50g lighter at 450g
  • Aluminium body option with titanium spindle — weight at 320g
  • 10mm reduced body width for improved cornering clearance
  • Crisp cleat engagement and exit for smooth starts and stops
  • Improved coating and branding
  • Favourable consumer pricing — Aluminum US$199; Aluminum with titanium spindle US$499

Nikola Pedals use a standard 3-hole standard style LOOK cleat and are compatible with any 9/16” crank-arm threading.

Stevovich said consistent feedback on comfort and how natural the pedals feel prompted Nikola’s current study at the Alleghany General Hospital and University of Pittsburgh. This study is focused on the kinematic benefits to cyclists and those with hip or knee injuries. A written summary is targeted to be published at the end of this year.

Investing over five years in research and development, Nikola Innovation is ‘excited to bring the new and improved 2.0 pedals in the market.’

“The difference cyclists can expect to experience is how the ZIVO motion activates your adductors and gluteus muscles more than a standard pedal,” Stevovich said. “The initial motion may take a few minutes to adjust to, however virtually every rider indicated the motion is unnoticeable after a few revolutions. Over 1,000 riders have tested the pedals consistently expressing how the motion feels natural — while enjoying improved efficiency, comfort and power.”

Nikola Innovation created a unique concept that aims to improve pedalling efficiencies and rider comfort for cyclists through its patented ZIVO Technology. The company adds that combining two motions of a skater and cyclist into one provides new efficiency, comfort, and power for the cyclist. Nikola’s philosophies are driven from the basic laws of science.

Its vision is to continue to develop ideas that harmonize the human body with the bicycle. Nikola Innovation sees opportunities to create new products that improve cycling and positively help users to ride in comfort with optimal performance.
