Just over five years ago, the team at Sufferfest created its first training video, The Downward Spiral. As the company points out, when the video was thrust into the world, it ‘immediately delivered levels of pain, agony and misery never before witnessed outside Sufferlandria.’
David McQuillen at The Sufferfest continued, “And because it made cyclists very, very fast, it has always been one of our most loved videos.”
He continued, “I was very proud of it. But over time it began to look a bit…how to say it kindly….dusty? When hanging around with good-looking assassins like Nine Hammers it looked like a rusty sledgehammer in a burlap sack. So we took The Downward Spiral aside, put it through a serious overhaul and today release an entirely new version of our first baby. Now it looks like a tornado in a cobblestone suit. Sharply tailored, of course.”
- New footage: Including shots from the 2015 Paris-Roubaix, Fleche-Wallone and Liege-Bastogne-Liege and footage from The Col Collective. ‘As you’ll have you face buried in your stem you’ll probably not see any of it, but we thought you should know.’
- New story: ‘Like all the best visits to Sufferlandria, the new DS has a storyline to keep riders engaged and motivated.’
- New graphics: The same design that emerged with Nine Hammers, including effort, cadence and interval countdown timers.
- New music: Sufferfest has kept the classics from Downward Spiral, but added a slew of new tracks for the recoveries to better match effort and cadence.
- Same ol’ workout: As Sufferfest notes, the reason DS has been so popular is because it works. ‘The two sets of descending intervals build speed, power and recovery in a way that few workouts can. We left it as is. Except for the new surges. And the penalty intervals. Um….you’ll see.’

‘Sufferlandria [a country that knows no borders, only lactate thresholds] continues to lobby the UN for recognition and fights the forces of sinister, terrible Couchlandria.’
