nuun and Dr Stacy Sims partner on ‘positive disruption in the sports drink industry’

nuun new Active and Energy products

Hydration specialist nuun has announced its partnership with exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist Dr Stacy Sims to ‘continually evolve the sports drink industry through education, product innovation and clean living initiatives.’

A release from nuun states that the two collaborators ‘believe the sports drink category has the ability to be a catalyst for a more active, healthier community while creating less environmental impact.’ Together with the exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist, nuun will aim to chart a new course for the industry by maximizing athletes’ of all levels performance and health while prioritizing ‘clean product, planet and sport’.

Dr Stacy Sims’ research and personal contributions have touched on a number of areas, such as separating hydration from fuelling with a priority on fluid absorption and osmolality. Stacy is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Waikato Adams Centre of High Performance and is developing ongoing research and expanding the post-graduate program while continuing her work with world-class athletes.

“The nuun team is honoured to work alongside Stacy, one of the most accomplished sport scientists in the world,” said Kevin Rutherford, nuun’s President and CEO. “Her passion for improving health and performance along with her desire to share her knowledge is truly remarkable.

“There is so much opportunity for positive disruption in the sports drink industry, and it is going to take purpose driven leaders joining forces to create impactful change.”

nuun’s release notes that ‘there is a shift occurring in the industry away from high sugar, artificially sweetened products, and nuun’s 100% plant-based, electrolyte rich, low sugar line has been celebrated by health conscious athletes, events and retailers.’ The brand’s stewardship extends to a commitment to protect the environment and support sport in the absence of performance enhancing drugs through ‘internal operations and external initiatives’.

“I truly appreciate and believe in nuun’s holistic approach to sports hydration, and this really attracted me to working with their team,” said Sims. “They are continually learning and evolving through the latest research in the exercise science and natural foods fields. And, nuun accomplishes this through clean practices which positively affect society and the environment.”

The partnership will kick-off at Interbike on Wednesday 21 September where Stacy Sims will be at the nuun booth, #23028, alongside Kevin Rutherford talking to the cycling industry about their vision to ‘create the new paradigm for the sports drink industry’.

Dr Stacy Sims has contributed to the exercise physiology and sports nutrition fields for more than 15 years leading research and innovations throughout her academic and consulting career. Stacy is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Waikato Adams Centre for High Performance advancing research in environmental considerations and sex differences across elite athletes to the general public. Prior to this, Stacy created natural sports nutrition products to solve problems of gastrointestinal distress and hydration for all athletes.

She served as an exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist at Stanford University, the University of Otago and Massey University specializing in sex differences of environmental and nutritional considerations for recovery and performance. Stacy has continually applied her knowledge in the field educating and supporting athletes at the highest level of sport, including Olympians and Tour de France riders, and is an elite athlete herself. Recently she published ROAR with Selene Yeager focusing on food and fitness matched to the female physiology.

nuun, based in Seattle, WA, is on a mission to ‘inspire a healthier, happier, more active lifestyle so that everyone can achieve life’s next personal best’. As a pioneer of electrolyte enhanced drink tablets, nuun is committed to replenishing active people by using clean ingredients and practices.
