Strava rolls out Live Segments for iPhone and Android

Strava Live Segments - Ride

Strava, the social network for athletes, has introduced Live Segments for mobile devices, the latest Premium feature with the aim to inspire athletes to improve their performance. Positioned as being ideal for the millions of cyclists and runners who use a mobile phone as their primary training and recording device, Live Segments offers real-time audio cues and visuals of an athlete’s current effort on a segment, their personal record and the person who is at the top of the leaderboard.

Strava Live Segments provides a variety of visual components, allowing athletes to view their second-by-second performance during starred segments and popular local segments. Audio cues enable athletes to hear their progress on a segment.

“Last July, we launched Live Segments for Garmin cycling computers and saw that athletes really enjoyed the feature,” said Aaron Forth, Chief Product Officer at Strava. “We wanted to extend that positive experience to the millions of athletes who use their phone for riding and running.”

To use Strava Live Segments, athletes begin by recording a ride or run. As athletes approach a starred segment or a popular segment, the screen automatically changes to Live Segments mode.

Athletes will see a map of the upcoming segment including a notification bar with segment name and start location. As they get closer to the start of the segment, the notification bar turns from black to orange. Once the segment starts, Premium athletes then see their current effort in the centre of the screen, their personal record on the left and the KOM, QOM or CR on the right.

Colour coding aims to make it easy to view progress and effort during a segment. Upon completing, the screen summarises their results and then returns to the athlete’s live stats.

Strava Live Segments are only available to Premium athletes. Billed as ‘the ultimate Strava experience’, Premium helps runners and cyclists ‘get the most out of their sport and connects them with those who want the same.’

Before, during and after activity, Premium maximises performance and elevates the Strava experience with personalised coaching, advanced analysis and now Live Segments. Premium is available to all Strava athletes for £3.99/month or £39.99/year.

Strava Live Segments is available now for Android and iOS users.
