Close to Alicante, Spain, and with an average of over 300 days of sunshine every year – Triathlon Training Spain is establishing a new venture, with a programme of training that will be open to a limited number of European triathletes and athletes who would like to live and be coached full-time in the Costa Blanca.
A release from the team at Triathlon Training Spain notes that Spain is officially the sunniest European country and the Costa Blanca has been declared to be amongst the healthiest regions in the world by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Triathlon Training Spain states that ‘every year the area is almost guaranteed to be bathed in sunshine when the North Europe is wet, windy and icy.’
With its climate, the tri training coaching team adds that ‘it is surprising that the area is under-utilised as a base for year-round training by many athletes.’
The Triathlon Training Spain team includes: Martin Hill, Head Coach and British Triathlon Federation Level 3 Coach and Certified Swim Smooth Coach; strength & conditioning and swim coaching specialist Matt Hill; and run coach specialist Llorenç Solbes a Spanish national athletics coach. (With four of his full time and three part time athletes competing at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Llorenç Solbes has athletes with medals in World Championships, European Championships, African Championships and Mediterranean Games.)

With the new full-time coaching packages, Triathlon Training Spain’s aim is to ‘attract athletes to this area of Spain to establish a recognised base for training in an environment that is conducive to full-time training without the problems of weather.’
Full-time coaching packages – criteria:
- Triathlon: national level from Olympic to middle distance, possible to full distance triathlon – maximum of four triathletes;
- Run: 5000m or 1500m or 800/400m – maximum of 4 athletes.
By living and training in this environment and with the knowledge that professional coaching is being provided, Triathlon Training Spain argues that locating to the Costa Blanca region of Spain should a logical step…. ‘With winter daytime temperatures often reaching a pleasant 15-200C and facilities to support training, why would you not want to be here!?’
