Sunrise Events, the organizer of XTERRA La Union in the Philippines, has confirmed that the off-road triathlon race, scheduled for 26 March 2017, has been cancelled. La Union, is a province in the Philippines located in Luzon, in the north of the country.

A notice of event cancellation has been sent to registered athletes and posted online. In the notice, the organising team stated that it was ‘very recently made aware that the host province cannot support the event’ as originally envisaged.

‘It is with deep sadness that we had to come to this decision,’ explained Sunrise Events in its official cancellation notice. ‘Staging a world class event requires full commitment and support from the host province. This is far and beyond any commercial support — it requires genuine sincerity and passion to host the event in the province.’

Registered athletes are being provided a full refund on entry fees, hotel bookings, and non-refundable airfare, as well as a bike jersey and event medal. The event registration may also be transferred to the XTERRA Cebu off-road triathlon scheduled for 23 April in Danao, which will continue as planned. Athletes can also request a transfer to any other event produced by Sunrise Events, such as IRONMAN 70.3 or 5150 Triathlon. The request for transfer should be received by 5 March 2017, or a refund will be issued.

“Sunrise Events is a world-class event producer with a proven track record, and years of experience in working with provinces to promote tourism through events,” said XTERRA President Janet Clark. “They have successfully produced XTERRA events in the Philippines for the past six years and received rave reviews from age groupers and elites alike. This is a very unfortunate situation; however, they are going above and beyond in extending every courtesy to all registered participants.”
