The one-hour television show featuring the XTERRA World Championship hit the airwaves across the US this weekend. The off-road tri show spectacle had airings in Tucson, AZ (Sat, 22 January at 09:30 local time on NBC), Portland, OR (Sun, 14:00 on KOIN), Madison, WI (Sat, 16:00 on CW), Hartford, CT (Sat, 13:00 on ABC), Buffalo, NY (Sun, 17:00 on CBS), Knoxville, TN (Sun, 17:00 on CBS), Grand Junction, CO (Sun, 17:00 on CBS), and Fairbanks, AK (Sun, 14:00 on NBC).
The following weekend XTERRA will hit the airwaves on the MSG Network in the US nation’s largest television market, New York, NY, at 15:00 on Saturday, 28 January and 17:00 on Sunday, 29 January. Next Sunday, the show will also be broadcast in Minneapolis, MN (midday on ABC) and Bowling Green, NY (11:30 on NBC).
This is the 21st straight year the XTERRA World Championship has been broadcast to a national, now international audience.
Team Unlimited, the organisation behind XTERRA, noted that the show, which highlights Maui’s natural beauty as a ‘scenic backdrop to XTERRA warriors putting their mental and physical toughness to the ultimate test’, will be seen by more than 6 million viewers via national syndication (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX), Fox Sports Network, ESPN International, and European distribution.
The 2016 XTERRA World Championship race was lauded as one of the toughest challenges in the history of XTERRA, and in this show viewers will see why for themselves. It started with big swells, a strong current, and shore-pounding waves and got tougher from there as riders trudged through muddy trails in the West Maui Mountains.
The finish times were the slowest ever recorded, yet racer after racer reportedly described it as ‘epic’ and ‘one for the ages’.
More than 800 endurance athletes from 46 countries participated in the event, which combined a one-mile rough water swim with a 20-mile mountain bike and gruelling 6.5-mile trail run.
