Entry numbers up and strong female participation at Long Course Weekend Mallorca

There are less than two months left for the second edition of the Long Course Weekend Mallorca, which will be held in Alcudia on the Spanish island of Mallorca. The race weekend spans Saturday 27th, Sunday 28th and Monday 29th October. Part of the Long Course Weekend brand family and organised by local firm Kumulus, the organising team report that the entry numbers to date are up, compared to this time last year.

Approaching 1,000 athletes are already signed up to participate in one of the three race days, or in all three consecutive LCW days of racing.

The expected numbers are already double last year’s participation year on year – with almost 500 British, nearly 200 Spanish and more than 100 Germans signed up. A high percentage of women are also taking part, and currently represent 45% of the total number of registered participants.

‘This stands out in a significant way, a percentage much higher than normal long distance events in Spain.’

Last year’s LCW Mallorca winners, Lucy Gossage and Tom Vickery from the UK, have also confirmed their presence at the starting line in 2018.

The Long Course Weekend Mallorca is a three day sporting festival with different sports and varying distances to choose from. To obtain the Long Course Weekend medal – featuring interlocking medals – athletes must complete each full distance Long Course Weekend event (3800m Swim, 172k Bike, 42k Run) across three consecutive days.

If an athlete wants to be a part of the weekend but doesn’t want to do the longer distances, or race consecutively, there are a variety of other racing combinations.

Swim Day
The Swim Day will take place on Saturday 27th and participants can choose between different swim distance options: 750m, 1500m, 1900m or 3800m – all taking place at Alcúdia bay.

Bike Day
On Sunday 28th, the Bike Day offers two distances to choose: 172km or 86km, with drafting allowed and riding on fully closed roads. The organisers add that this offers up ‘A fantastic way to see and experience for yourself the stunning coastal views and rolling countryside of the island.’

Run Day
The culmination of the 3 day LCW Mallorca sporting festival is Monday 29th October. Here, the Run Day has four different options to compete: 5k, 10k, 21k or 42k. All courses are along the beach promenade, next to the sea, ‘in a very flat route with spectacular views and surrounded by palm trees’.
