The extensive program of events leading up to the ITU World Triathlon Series Grand Final in Gold Coast, Australia, has a new addition. The ITU Women’s Committee has developed an event designed to provide an entry-point to the world of multisport racing. The Open Novice Aquathlon is aimed particularly at women and girls over the age of 14, and it will form part of the 2018 Open Aquathlon being held on 12 September.

“We wanted to create an event that is attractive to female friends and family members of those involved in the Grand Final, as well as locals and tourists,” said Women’s Committee chair Tomoko Wada. “In this way we can open the door for newcomers to multi-sports in the most welcoming and uncompetitive environment possible.”

Participants will have their own wave at the 2018 Open Aquathlon event to ‘experience the thrill of racing with those of the same level over a 300m swim and 2.5km run’. A Novice Clinic will be held on the morning of the race to offer further tips to the athletes and provide all the information needed to help and encourage them to get involved.

In the run-up to the event, a six-week online training programme is being prepared by the Women’s Committee and Australia’s two-time World Triathlon Champion, Emma Carney. This aims to give more support to those wanting to tackle their first multisport event. Every participant also receives a diploma from the course and a medal after the race.

The Novice Aquathlon program is designed to encourage participation of women in the sport of triathlon and is aimed at beginner women who want to try this short, non-competitive distance.

  • 6 week online training program
  • Weekly emails which include tips about racing, nutrition & hydration
  • Diploma will be emailed to every finisher
  • Finisher medal
  • Team photo at the finish line
