National governing body USA Triathlon (USAT) is getting set to launch a first-of-its-kind referral program, which enables USA Triathlon annual members to earn a discount for recruiting new participants to the sport. The program is a part of Time to Tri, the industry-wide initiative launched by USA Triathlon and IRONMAN in January to inspire 100,000 new participants to finish their first triathlon.
Through the program, adult annual members will be able to receive US$5 off their next annual membership for each first-time adult annual member they refer to USA Triathlon. The new member will also receive a US$5 discount.
“We know most triathletes get their start in the sport after being encouraged by a friend, so we created a program that rewards that practice in a tangible way,” said Rocky Harris, USA Triathlon CEO. “The referral program is focused on bringing first-timers into our sport and allows existing USA Triathlon annual members to benefit directly, which is a win-win for the entire multisport community.
“This is a meaningful way for current triathletes to take part in the Time to Tri initiative, as we work together to grow triathlon across the US.”
All adult annual members will receive a unique referral URL when they register or renew their membership. The URL can then be shared with friends, family members and colleagues who are aspiring triathletes. When a referred individual uses the trackable URL to purchase an adult annual membership, he or she receives US$5 off the membership. The referrer, meanwhile, receives a US$5 credit to apply to his or her next renewal payment.
Athletes can recruit up to 10 new members with this method, effectively earning a free annual membership renewal for the next year. If the referrer recruits more than 10 new members, the additional credits can be applied to the following year’s membership renewal.
The referred must be a first-ever USA Triathlon annual member, and all memberships must be redeemed on the USA Triathlon membership website – usatriathlon.org/membership
A special referral code will also be available to USA Triathlon Certified Clubs that bring new athletes into the sport. For any new USA Triathlon annual member who uses a club code upon registration, US$5 will be donated to the referring club at the end of 2018.
The full price of a USA Triathlon annual membership is US$50. Current and former adult one-day members, who have never been an annual member, are eligible for this program. Youth annual memberships (youth one-day memberships are not offered) do not apply, however.
USA Triathlon will notify its constituents via email when the program goes live in the coming weeks.
