Sebamed Brighton and Hove Children’s Triathlon set to double in 2018

Children's Triathlon at Brighton

The Sebamed Brighton and Hove Triathlon’s children’s races are back for 2018 and will be ‘bigger and better than last year’. The organising team reports that entries are already rising rapidly. First introduced into the 2017 event, the kid’s race is set to double in size this year.

The open water sea swim, closed road cycle course and flat Hove seafront run on England’s south coast will test active children who already love triathlon; and the shorter distances will allow beginners to comfortably experience the sport for the first time. As such, this triathlon is positioned as being ideal for all abilities and perfect for those just coming into the sport.

The children’s races will take place on Sunday 16 September alongside the adults, and on the Saturday a scootathlon is taking place for the younger, budding triathletes (3-8 yrs), for which there are also various distances.

Children will race over the following distances:

Triathlons
Tristart (8yrs) – 50m swim / 1.4km bike / 500m run
Tristar 1 (9-10yrs) – 100m swim / 4km bike / 1.5km run
Tristar 2 (11-12yrs) – 200m swim / 4km bike / 1.5km run
Tristar 3 (13-14yrs) – 200m swim / 4km bike / 2.5km run

Scootathlons
3yrs – 100m scoot / 100m bike / 100m run
4yrs – 200m scoot / 200m bike / 200m run
5-8yrs – 300m scoot / 300m bike / 300m run

John Lunt, Brighton and Hove Triathlon Event Director, said “I’m very excited for our Children’s Triathlon to grow – as triathlon teaches discipline, requires multiple skills and encourages determination. But most importantly, it’s an extremely fun way to keep youngsters healthy and active.”

Sebamed Brighton and Hove Triathlon will take place for the third successive year on 15-16 September 2018 – with the 2017 race seeing a reported 20% increase in participants, 40% female entrants and 43% beginners. The Children’s Triathlon will take place alongside the main event, which has relay options and the ‘Rainbow Wave’ for adults in support of diversity and inclusion in sport.

Supporting triathlon in the local area are Brighton Tri Club which holds taster sessions in conjunction with GoTri in the summer.
