UCI Classics Series postponed

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has confirmed the postponement of the UCI Classics Series. The announcement was made this month during the 2019 UCI Women’s WorldTour and UCI WorldTour seminar in Montreux (Switzerland).

Originally due to get underway in 2020, UCI Classics Series of 21 one-day pro cycling events will be put back to 2021. It was reportedly not popular with pro teams and riders.

The decision to postpone was communicated to representatives of riders, teams and organisers at the seminar. UCI adds that this will give time to build this new series together with all the parties involved (organisers, teams, riders and UCI)… ‘The principle of this series had been unanimously agreed by stakeholders in September 2018.’

Convinced of the merit of the new series, that would provide a ‘source of additional revenues distributed between concerned parties thanks to improved exposure of one-day races, the UCI will continue discussions with representatives of professional road cycling with the aim of a rapid launch.’

A release from UCI added, ‘In a call for unity, the UCI President David Lappartient appealed to all stakeholders to work together to build the future of our sport.’
