American bicycle manufacturer Detroit Bikes has opened up a new line of business assembling the Nishiki Colorado line of mountain bikes for Dicks Sporting Goods stores across the United States.
“Dicks Sporting Goods is a great fit for Detroit Bikes manufacturing and assembly,” said Zakary Pashak, founder and owner of Detroit Bikes. “They have an extensive national reach and make a premium product for their customers.
“They wanted a domestic final assembly and distribution option to shorten order lead times and have a more fully assembled product shipped to their 850+ retail locations.”
The Dicks Sporting Goods bike business will consist of over 1600 Nishiki Colorado units in the first half of 2020 with additional models projected to be added to Detroit Bikes’ assembly as the year progresses.
“We are hoping to get to 10,000 units per year for Dicks Sporting Goods within our first year of production,” added Pashak.
New production means new jobs, and Detroit Bikes recently hired seven new local employees to get started on the new orders. Pashak continued, “We are projecting that a year or two from now we will have hired up to 50 new employees to carry out this line of business.”
To finance initial orders Detroit Bikes worked with the Detroit Development Fund and also secured private funding from ‘a British investor with strong Michigan roots.’
The Nishiki Men’s Colorado Comp 1X 27.5+ Mountain Bike features a lighter frame, a 1×11 drivetrain and disc brakes. The Colorado has been called “the most budget friendly mountain bike worth riding on a trail” by YouTube channel Daily MTB Rider.
Detroit Bikes manufacturing and assembly takes up 50,000 sq ft of space on the far west-side of the city in a certified Opportunity Zone. According to the company, it is the largest bicycle frame factory in the United States.
