Accessories specialist Lumenus has released the IoT-connected ioLIGHT. The company notes that the new ‘bike light with brains is designed for the rider who knows what it’s like to share the road with vehicles – day or night.’
When connected to the free GPS-guided Lumenus app, the ioLIGHT is ‘reactive to everything going on in real time, providing the rider the safest cycling-specific route from start to finish.’
A strobing white flash-mode headlight engages via the app when approaching intersections to enhance visibility in danger zones.
A yellow turn signals trigger is based on cycle-specific GPS routes, ‘showing drivers impending turns and acting as a turn-by-turn navigation for the rider with real-time directions.’
An internal gyroscope triggers the rear red brake light to fellow riders or drivers when slowing.
The Lumenus app is built on MapBox to provide cycling routes in urban settings worldwide, making it a tool to travel with in addition to its interface with the bike light.
Once a user enters a destination, the best course to the final stop gets mapped out. If an alternate route or known short cut is taken along the way, the directions will automatically update to the final destination and the new route can be saved for future use.
Lumenus notes that it will continually add new features to the app… ‘making ioLIGHT the smart light that keeps getting smarter through software updates.’
Although ioLIGHT is sold individually (MSRP US$100) and functions as a single unit that can attach to bike, helmet, backpack, belt loop, etc., the two-pack (available as a bundle for US$180) is designed for front and rear safety when riding. Both are paired and controlled from one phone.
