Sea Otter Australia and Pedal Power have announced that the Fitz’s Challenge cycling event will still run this year, but has been postponed for three weeks.
Originally due to run alongside the now cancelled Sea Otter Australia 2021, the event organising team is moving the cycling event back to October 24th to allow sufficient time to ‘offer a high quality and COVID safe event.’
The Fitz’s Challenge is billed as Australia’s toughest hill climbing event. Over the last 31 years, tens of thousands of riders have tested themselves at the event in Canberra’s Brindabellas. While rides are known for their tough hills, only the longer distances ask riders to tackle Fitz’s Hill, the climb after which the event is named.
Taking place across the Brindabella Ranges and Namadgi National Park in the ACT (Australian Capital Territory), the first Fitz’s Challenge was held back in 1989.
Many riders start their Fitz’s journey by testing themselves on the hills of the 50km and the 105km events. These are positioned as tough but achievable rides for the keen cyclist looking for a personal challenge. The gruelling Fitz’s Hill is the highlight of the 165km and longer rides.
This year, for the first time, the Fitz’s Challenge will offer two brand new rides: the 130km Corin Challenge and the 185km Orroral Challenge.
