Virtual GENERALI Berlin Half Marathon acts as bridge to rescheduled real-world event

The 40th GENERALI Berlin Half Marathon was originally due to take place on April 11, 2021. However, the current coronavirus pandemic, has seen the event rescheduled for August 22, 2021.

In light of the circumstances, SCC Events has decided to organise a sporting get-together in April, to mark the original race weekend. The Virtual GENERALI Berlin Half Marathon, will be a virtual race at the start of the season that aims to ‘strengthen the spirit of the endurance sports community.’

SCC adds that the virtual event will function as a spring season start as well as a bridging event to tide the real-world half marathon in August.

From April 9-11, 2021, runners, inline skaters, wheelchair athletes and hand cyclists are invited to participate in the new virtual event.

There will be a 10k option in addition to the 21.1km half marathon. With the shorter distance, SCC notes that it is ‘deliberately catering to active runners who may have only found their joy in endurance sports during the current pandemic and now want to face their first challenge.’

Both distances must be completed in one go (although short breaks are allowed). Athletes can upload their time following completion of the virtual challenge, with an official ranking to follow.

The participation fee is €7. In addition, interested parties can book a limited premium package with an exclusive medal and other surprises. The participation fee includes a charity contribution to The Human Safety Net.

The Human Safety Net is a worldwide community initiative of Generali Group. The charity component is intended to send a clear signal for social cooperation during these challenging times.

Stefan Göbel, Head of External Communications & Corporate Identity at Generali Deutschland AG, said “The digital implementation of the GENERALI Berlin Half Marathon on the original date will create a whole new virtual Berlin feeling for many people, in which people from all around the world can participate.

“Safety will also be our top priority when it is time to finally master the original route through Berlin in August 2021 in person, as well.”

Jürgen Lock, Managing Director of SCC Events said “With the Virtual GENERALI Berlin Half Marathon, we are making it possible for participants around the world to experience the motivating cohesion of the entire endurance sports community through individual performances. Our exquisitely designed medal will add the crowning touch.”

A release from the organising team added…

‘We remain optimistic regarding August 22, 2021, with the goal of welcoming thousands of participants to Berlin as part of the 40th GENERALI Berlin Half Marathon.’
