British Cycling has confirmed that, by mutual agreement with the Board of Directors, Brian Facer is to step down as CEO for the national governing body with immediate effect.
The search for a new CEO has now commenced, with Cycling Delivery Director Danielle Every appointed as Acting CEO in the interim.
Brian Facer has been in the CEO role for less than two years. He was confirmed as British Cycling CEO in November 2020 and took on the role from outgoing CEO Julie Harrington who left in January 2021.
Despite a number of positive initiatives in recent months (such as an expansion of on-board cameras for bike racing), British Cycling has face some controversy under Facer’s leadership. A u-turn on cycling guidance during the Queen’s funeral in September was followed by allegations of sports-washing surrounding a new sponsorship from Shell earlier this month.
British Cycling Chair, Frank Slevin, said “We remain fully committed to the delivery of our ‘Lead our sport, inspire our communities’ strategy, as we continue our work to support and grow our sport and wider activities, and provide our Great Britain Cycling Team riders with the best possible platform for success.
“Our new CEO will join the organisation at an exciting time as we build towards next year’s inaugural UCI Cycling World Championships in Scotland, and the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024.”
