The first virtual Challenge Family race will take place this Saturday, 19 February, on a virtual outing of the Integrity Homes Challenge Wanaka course in New Zealand’s Southern Alps.
Using ROUVY’s video footage combined with 3D animation, triathletes and cyclists from around the world will be able to pit themselves against the tough 90km course, without having to leave home. They can also measure themselves against one of the world’s best triathletes, Hayden Wilde, the Olympic bronze medallist in Tokyo, alongside Rebecca Clarke, fresh off her win at the Tauranga Half.
This inaugural virtual race on ROUVY will replace the real-world Challenge Wanaka event, which was cancelled due to New Zealand’s COVID restrictions.
“As our longest standing race outside of Roth, it was a real shame to see Challenge Wanaka cancelled due to COVID, despite the team’s best efforts,” said Challenge Family CEO, Jort Vlam.
“However, it is fitting that Challenge’s first international race is now the first virtual race, again making history. Our partnership with ROUVY opens the world’s borders and allows everyone to race this spectacular course. ROUVY’s real-life footage really captures why this is one of the world’s most scenic triathlons.”
Athletes can race Challenge Wanaka on Saturday 19 February at 09:00 NZT / 21:00 CET (18 February). The virtual event is open to athletes of all abilities; the only requisite is a smart trainer.
For those not already part of the ROUVY community, participants must register. Once registered, they can receive an additional two weeks’ free trial.
Challenge Family added that… ‘Hayden Wilde, the Olympic bronze medallist in Tokyo, and Rebecca Clarke, a top Kiwi pro, will wait to be challenged by anyone from around the world.’
