In the latest product update from Strava, the Map feature will start showing information on over 71,000 bikeshare docking stations. This is positioned as a helpful new data layer that is free for anyone with the Strava app.
Through the latest Map update, users will see vendor, location and real-time number of bikes available.
This update marks the second anniversary of Strava Metro’s transition to a free tool for urban planners. The company adds that… ‘Metro makes active transportation more accessible, efficient and safe by helping transport planners, city governments and safe-infrastructure advocates build better streets for anyone on foot or a bike.’
Last year alone, 13,000 carbon tonnes were reportedly saved by cycling commuters on Strava, which is a carbon offsetting equivalent to planting 650,000 trees, or to taking 6,500 cars off the road for a year.
Strava subscribers can find a bike share station, get a route and find the closest place to dock their bike to their destination. Non-subscribers can enjoy free access to information on over 71,000 docking stations worldwide on Strava.
The data layer includes information from more than 601 bikeshare and scooter systems in 544 cities and 73 countries worldwide. More than 71,705 docking stations are included in the General Bikeshare Feed Specification (GBFS), the open-source mobility data source Strava is tapping into.
The new update is available on mobile (iOS/Android) app version 272.
